BEST-OF-HOUZZ-2016

Now that it is early October most people who want a landscape project installed hold off to spring. They are convinced it is too late in the season for this type of work. But here in central/north central New Jersey landscape professionals often install projects up to late December and even into January in some cases.

With the colder weather are some advantages as well as challenges too. Some of the advantages are most trees and shrubs are dormant and transplant well this time of year. There are often very good bargains on plant materials that can be passed along to the client that would never be possible in the spring. Another huge advantage is that it is typically less busy for most design build firms and you will likely get more focus on your project.

Of course the weather can be a challenge and early snow or an early deep freeze can cause a delay at times. The surprising thing is most often it warms again for long enough to complete the project. Snow can be moved easily, but it is really a deep frost in the ground that makes landscaping difficult. The other challenge is growing grass seed. Late fall and winter projects must be hayed and seeded in the spring. Often sod can be cut and installed if weather conditions permit.

The misconception of installing landscape projects in late fall early winter are just untrue. The fact is a landscape professional can install a quality project as long as the client has a little flexibility in possible weather delays. The advantages of getting the first phase of a larger project in, saving on plant costs, and getting total focus from your landscape company often outweighs the challenges.
